 FROM THE HELM
BLOWN AWAY: Sailors competing at Sail Melbourne in late 2009.
Welcome to the first edition of The Dream Begins in Perth for 2010.
On 4th January, the Perth 2011 team moved to new offices, located at Level 1, 46 Mews Road, Fremantle. The new, bigger location provides us with room to grow, views of ‘Centre Course’ for the Perth 2011 Championships and simpler access to the other courses and facilities.
In November, the Australian Government officially announced that it had matched the State Government’s generous contribution dollar for dollar for the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships. Federal Minister for Sport Hon Kate Ellis MP and State Minister for Tourism Hon Dr Liz Constable MLA made the announcement at a media conference held at Royal Perth Yacht Club – Fremantle Annexe. Perth 2011 is very grateful for their ongoing support.
In mid-December 2009, the Second Emerging Nations Programme (ENP) Intensive Training Session wound up. Eleven participants from 10 different nations were invited to Perth to train under ENP Head Coaches Belinda Stowell and Arthur Brett.
The coaching staff were delighted with their increased skills and the observable improvement in their confidence. As with the inaugural ENP, I was once again impressed with the camaraderie of the athletes, despite their different backgrounds, cultures and the fact they came from quite different countries. The climax of the second ENP was the Inaugural Perth 2011 ENP Regatta, which provided the athletes with the opportunity to compete against Perth’s best in an international competition. The regatta also gave Perth 2011 the chance to ‘test the waters’ of the World Championship courses and highlighted areas we need to progress to reach an international standard. The third ENP runs between 8-25 February, 2010 and it is gearing up to be another exciting programme.
Prior to Christmas, I headed east, with Perth 2011 Sailing Manager Michael Downing, to watch several of our ENP athletes compete at Sail Melbourne and to discuss matters relating to Perth 2011 with Sail Melbourne race organisers. I was thrilled to see the ENP athletes perform well at Sail Melbourne, particularly Nicolas Lozano who took out a Gold Medal in the RS:X class.
I would like to welcome to the Perth 2011 team the new Shore and Volunteer Manager, Daniel Healy. Daniel’s experience in working for big international sports events will be invaluable to Perth 2011.
Once again, may I thank you for your ongoing support of the Perth 2011 Sailing World Championships. I look forward to working with you towards our shared vision – December 2011, which is now about 100 weeks away!

Best wishes,
JOHN LONGLEY AM

ENP PRODUCES GOLD MEDAL WINNING CHAMPION
WINNING EDGE: Nicolas Lozano (left) after accepting his Gold Medal at Sail Melbourne.
Colombian RS:X Sailor Nicolas Lozano has the fitness and determination - combined with recent training under two of Australia’s best sailing coaches, he has found the winning combination! Lozano, an ENP participant, secured a Gold Medal at the first event of the 2009-10 ISAF World Cup (Sail Melbourne) in December 2009, proving the programme’s worth. The Colombian RS:X sailor started well, claiming victory in his first two races in Melbourne. This was Lozano’s first time competing at this event and he claimed that his overall victory was due to his excellent preparation at the Second ENP Intensive Training Session, which he attended under the guidance of Head ENP Coaches Belinda Stowell (2000 Sydney Gold Medallist in the 470s) and Arthur Brett (2008 Beijing Olympic Games Coach). As one of 11 attendees, from 10 developing sailing nations, Lozano and the other
participants learnt on and off the water the skills, determination and dedication required to compete against the world’s elite. The ENP is a first of its kind sailing initiative, which aims to identify emerging talent and progress their abilities to a level where they can compete at Perth 2011 and potentially qualify their nation for the 2012 London Olympic Games. Lozano is well on his way to making this a reality. For him, the Dream Begins in Perth!
ENP team mates from the second session – Rohini Rau, of India, Nik Azizan, of Malaysia, Dany Stanisic, of Serbia and Alexandr Denisiuc, of Moldova also competed at Sail Melbourne. Denisiuc attended both of the Perth 2011 ENP sessions and was pleased to see Peter Henry, of the Cook Islands and Joshua Choo, of Singapore, who attended the inaugural ENP Intensive Training Session with him, both racing at Sail Melbourne.
After Sail Melbourne, Denisiuc, Azizan and Henry then travelled to Adelaide to compete in the 2010 Australian Laser Championships before heading home.

ATHLETES EXCEL AT SECOND ENP CAMP
CONSTANT IMPROVEMENT: ENP Laser and Laser Radial sailors compete in 25-30 knot winds off Fremantle at the Inaugural ENP Regatta in December, 2009.
The second ENP Intensive Training Programme held between 20th November and 11th December, 2009 may be over but the athletes’ immense progress during their short time here and their dedication to what they need to work on ‘to make it’ has not been forgotten.
Eleven participants from 10 nations – Latvia, Moldova, India, Pakistan, Paraguay, Colombia, Serbia, Malaysia, Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago – were chosen to come to Perth to train. While here, they experienced the weather conditions that are likely to ensue come December 2011, when the Sailing World Championships are held in Perth. These ENP sailors are top international athletes who hail from developing sailing nations. According to ENP Head Coaches Belinda Stowell and Arthur Brett, being provided with the opportunity to overcome difficulties and limitations in their home nations gives them a better chance of competing in their respective Olympic sailing class at Perth 2011 and potentially qualifying their nations for the 2012 London Olympic Games. For these young Olympic hopefuls, the Dream Begins in Perth!
Two of the participants, Anna Aile, of Latvia and Alexandr Denisiuc, of Moldova, were invited back for this second programme after having successfully completed the inaugural ENP in July-August last year.
Besides intensive on and off the water training that provided them with the skills, knowledge and tactics to compete against the world’s best, they also took time to enjoy the beautiful sites, including Fremantle by bicycle, a visit to Caversham Wildlife Park to pat the kangaroos, koalas and wombats and several shopping trips. Twelve athletes have been chosen for the third ENP programme, which begins in a few weeks time and their names and respective countries will be announced shortly.

 CHARITY ALIGNMENTS MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL
Perth 2011 recognises the tremendous importance of community health and safety, that’s why it has recently partnered with two of the most relevant charities – Fremantle Sea Rescue and the Asthma Foundation of WA - to promote these vital practices.
Director Commercial Operations Darren Beazley is delighted to welcome the biggest sea rescue group in the country, Fremantle Sea Rescue and the Asthma Foundation, that has been supporting the local community for 40 years, to be a part of the biggest sailing Event Australia has ever seen.
According to Fremantle Sea Rescue President Nick Hill, members take their responsibility to provide 24/7 coverage, 365 days a year seriously and regularly train to maintain the highest of standards, skills, safety and professionalism. Mr Hill explained that their partnership with Perth 2011 was an easy decision as they already had an affinity with the Event.
Similar to the sporting industry, the Asthma Foundation of WA focuses on good health and health prevention practices. It is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the alleviation of asthma as a cause of morbidity and mortality in the community. The Foundation offers education and support services for people with asthma and their carers and funds local medical and scientific research into asthma. Asthma Foundation WA Chief Executive Officer John Gummer is thrilled with the Foundation’s selection as an Aligned Charity to the Championships, as they “share core values and a vision for helping people breathe better”. Mr Gummer said that athletes, families and officials will also be educated in the appropriate management of asthma.

WORLD SAILOR OF YEAR TRAINS IN PERTH
SAILING HARD: Anna Tunnicliffe (left) and Marit Bouwmeester training off Fremantle.
In December 2009, ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year and Gold Medallist in the Laser Radial class at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Anna Tunnicliffe was in Perth “testing the waters” of the world-renowned Perth 2011 medal course in preparation for the World Championships, which will be held in Fremantle in two years time (December 2011). Tunnicliffe was training from the Fremantle Sailing Club (FSC) on Bathers Bay - renamed 'Centre Course' for the Perth 2011 Event.
Concurrently, 11 top international athletes from developing sailing nations, including India and Colombia, were at FSC improving their sailing skills through the second Emerging Nations Programme (ENP) Intensive Training Session. These ENP athletes are on the brink of reaching Olympic level although due to limitations at home they have not quite reached their potential. Through the ENP, talent is being identified and progressed under the guidance of ENP Head Coaches Arthur Brett (Beijing 2008 Olympic Coach) and Belinda Stowell (2000 Sydney Olympic Games Gold Medallist - 470s). Potentially these sailors could reach a standard to qualify for Perth 2011 and their nation for the 2012 London Olympic Games Sailing Competition. The Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships is the main qualifying Event for the 2012 London Olympic Games for all 10 Olympic sailing
classes and Tunnicliffe plans to be competing and winning in London! Last month, Tunnicliffe was training on the same waters but quite separately to the ENP athletes, in her Laser Radial with Dutch international (Laser Radial) sailor Marit Bouwmeester. Tunnicliffe and Bouwmeester are 'getting a feel' for the weather and conditions in Fremantle that they will likely encounter come December 2011. During her stay in Western Australia, Tunnicliffe kindly agreed to meet with the ENP athletes.
The ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award is the highest award a sailor may receive in recognition of his or her outstanding achievements and Tunnicliffe joins a list of top athletes to receive the coveted award. Tunnicliffe was also just announced as US Sailing's 2009 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year. For Tunnicliffe, this time around, the Dream Begins in Perth!

BE SUN SMART AND ENJOY THE BEACHES THIS SUMMER
IDYLLIC: Meelup Beach in Western Australia's South West.
The coast along Australia’s South West is brimming with beautiful, pristine beaches perfect for swimming, relaxing, snorkelling, and surfing. Jetty Baths in Bunbury is only two and half hours south of Perth. With its calm shallow waters it is perfect for swimming and you might be lucky enough to spot some dolphins. Have a picnic or barbeque, or grab a bite to eat at the local kiosk. Further south around Dunsborough and Eagle Bay, you will find a host of calm bays and beaches, including the magnificent Bunker Bay and popular Meelup Beach. Around Margaret River and Yallingup, there are plenty of great beaches. Head to Surfer’s Point where the Margaret River Pro is held every year for some great waves, or well-known Smiths Beach. Denmark’s Greens Pool is rated one of Western Australia’s most idyllic beaches. It gets its name for its beautiful
green waters and the rocks which surround it to create a sheltered natural swimming pool. Remember to be sun smart, and observe any warnings about conditions.
